Business Unit Managing Director

Primary Objective:

Responsible for managing and directing a business unit to successfully achieve personal and business objectives and success measurements. Defines strategic direction and business unit specific objectives, with due regard to broader corporate objectives, subject to annual senior management approval.

Major Areas of Accountability:

  • Develop annual business plan, including resource requirements, resource structure, operational and business development plans.
  • Maintain tracking of all key metrics relative to the attainment of plan, and make adjustments where necessary to secure attainment of objectives.
  • Develop and manage the budget process.
  • Prepare quarterly reports to management regarding status of business

Team Development

  • Create and promote a business environment that engages and motivates staff to achieve defined objectives and operate as a team.
  • Apply business unit policies, practices and procedures with fairness and equity
  • Develop and communicate vision and expectation levels to unit members.
  • Manage the successful integration of multi-disciplined team functions.
  • Define and develop unit member roles, responsibilities and accountabilities.
  • Provide tools needed for the business unit to accomplish stated objectives.
  • Consistently provide feedback and communication to unit members related to company and business unit performance.
  • Empower unit members to make decisions based on established criteria.
  • Select, coach, and retain qualified staff in direct report.
  • Ensure that each manager in direct report meets their personal and business objectives

Operational and Financial Management

  • Assess individual business and technical performance using results-based measures.
  • Provide and require use of training and development opportunities where needed.
  • Identify and coordinate best practices compliance activities
  • Promote and provide coordination between business unit members to remove obstacles to effective performance and success
  • Ensure that key customer and supplier contracts and relationships are maintained
  • Monitor frequently and ensure that budgets for all revenues and expenses are met
  • Maintain key margins and profitability
  • Pursue capital investment from Corporate where necessary to support long term and immediate growth or efficiency opportunities.
  • Make operating decisions needed to achieve business results.
  • Develop and execute strategies to integrate policy and claim objectives.
  • Measure overall business unit results against defined success measurements.

Business Development

  • Require and assure that business development strategy and initiatives and activities are coordinated for the whole business unit.
  • Actively participate in development activities whether maintaining executive relationships with key clients, attending and participating in industry conferences and events, opening new doors of opportunity, or assisting with new business pitches.
  • Manage prospecting and development activities of team members as defined in structural and team responsibilities
  • Meet or exceed objectives for revenue growth

Corporate

  • Define and present divisional strategic plan.
  • Develop and execute related business unit plans to retain and grow the book of business and to achieve profit and loss financial results.
  • Develop and implement an active approach to organizational learning, customer focus and internal process improvement.
  • Partner with other business unit managers to address outstanding issues and achieve overall company business goals and objectives.

Education, Experience and Skills Required:

An undergraduate degree in Commerce, or Science, or equivalent, and an MBA would be an asset.

At least three (3) years experience leading a business unit of comparable size and complexity

At least two (2) years experience in an outsource role in the pharmaceutical industry or similar.

  2. Ability to define, attract and retain the management talent necessary to meet goals
  3. Ability to manage client expectations and ensure appropriate risk management in all projects
  4. Ability to control expenses and ensure that all activities produce adequate margins.
  5. Ability to lead, direct and manage the results of a diverse, multifunctional work unit.
  6. Ability to manage multiple tasks, set priorities and make decisions.
  7. Exceptional oral and written communication skills in both informal settings and formal presentations.
  8. Strong leadership and coaching skills to guide staff toward improved performance.
  9. Inspire innovation and continuous quality improvement.
  10. Serve as a positive role model to business unit members.
