Location: San Diego, California (Sorrento Valley)
Status: Full-time/Direct-hire

Position Summary:

We are currently seeking qualified candidates for our Sustaining Engineer position located at our new facility in the Sorrento Valley area in San Diego, CA.  Reporting to the Manufacturing Engineering Manager, this position will have an emphasis on technical support of the test of existing products.  Other responsibilities include supporting and improving the manufacture and performance of existing products, including special modifications of standard products for custom orders, and working with design engineering in the final development of new products and managing the initial manufacturing pilot builds.  The ideal candidate will have very well developed multitasking and project management skills.  Strong interpersonal skills are required for interfacing with mostly internal customers.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Required:

• Bachelors degree or extensive instrumentation technical experience.
• 5+ years experience in technical environment.
• Excellent interpersonal skills required for inter-departmental and team interaction; experience with direct interaction with manufacturing/production personnel.
• Highly developed organization and time management skills.
• Proficient with MS Word, Excel, Outlook and other office productivity software.
• Experience in technical assembly documentation and/or test procedure development, editing, or writing.
• Multidisciplinary product experience (i.e., not purely electronic, or purely mechanical, etc.).
• Knowledge of product structure/bills of materials, basic understanding of MRP.

Preferred:

• Experience in the instrumentation or environmental industries.
• Experience with Lean manufacturing.
• Experience with ISO 9000 documentation requirements.

Job Duties:

• Higher level technical support of the production floor for instrumentation under test.  This primarily involves troubleshooting large scale or technically complex problems beyond the skill set of the production technicians.
• Supporting and improving the manufacture and performance of existing products.
• Special modifications of standard products for custom orders.
• Working with design engineering in the final development of new products.
• Managing the initial manufacturing pilot builds of new products.
• Generating manufacturing documentation and processes (BOM management, assembly and test methods, tools, procedures & drawings).
• Perform alternate source evaluations and decisions to replace obsolete components, improve quality, or reduce cost while maintaining instrument integrity.
• Evaluating document change requests and implementing the changes.
• Managing cost reduction and productivity improvement projects.
