Chemical Process Engineer

Location/City : TN - Knoxville


The Chemical Process Engineer is involved as a project leader and/or team member and is responsible for the process system development/improvement for CO2 products (Chilled Ammonia or Advanced Amine) as well as the regression of the data acquired in lab experiments and pilots into the process simulation models.  Reports to the process development manager of the respective technology (Advanced Amine or Chilled Ammonia)

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Process model development and improvement
  • Perform material and heat balance calculations
  • Perform pinch analysis
  • Develop test programs for measurement campaigns
  • Develop the main process documents, to include process flow diagrams.
  • Support Technology department in Piping & Instrumentation Diagram development as needed
  • Regression of data gained in lab experiments and pilots into the process simulation model
  • Interface with other disciplines to support the design and construction of pilots and full-scale plants
  • Assist other disciplines with the design and specification of process equipment
  • Perform technical and economic evaluations of equipment/process alternatives
  • Participate in measurement campaigns and commissioning, start-up and operation of plants
  • Support the design of experimental facilities and perform experiment studies.
  • Manage and perform R&D activities and other actions to meet roadmap expectations, Product Development Quality (PDQ)-assessment needs, and Alstom´s general competitiveness, in assigned technology
  • Utilize the unique experience/skill-set acquired through R&D projects in support and service to the business regions
  • Identify possible patentable ideas in the R&D or other projects

 

   

Education Requirements:

Masters degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering is required.    PhD a plus

 

Experience:

  • Five to ten years experience working on process development or application in the Air Pollution Control, Industrial Gas, Chemical or Petroleum Process industry. 
  • Proficiency in process simulator is required.  Proficiency in Aspen is s plus
  • Experience with analyzing techniques and interpretation of experimental data.  Experience gain through academic research projects or while working in industry will be considered.

 

Certification:

None

 

Knowledge:

  • Absorption/Distillation simulation.  Rate based simulation a plus
  • Reaction equilibrium thermodynamics
  • Vapor/Liquids/Solids equilibrium
  • Chemical reaction kinetics

 

Skills:

  • Chemical Process simulation using commercial and in-house computer models
  • Simulation of reaction systems
  • Plant data reconciliation methodology
  • Economic modeling, plant cost modeling, and lifetime cost analysis a plus.
  • Field/performance testing and sampling methodologies a plus.
  • Heat & Mass transfer calculations a plus
  • Pressure drop calculations a plus

 

Ability:

  • Effective communication and presentation skills
  • Good time management and planning skills
  • Able to work and communicate effectively in dispersed, multi-cultural teams.

 

Safety Training Criteria:

10-Hour OSHA Training 

 

Physical Conditions:

  • Ability to work in office, lab and construction site environments. 
  • Must be capable of travel to client, consultants, suppliers, company offices, and job sites. 
  • Job sites require use of ladders and stairs to perform duties.
  • Frequent domestic and/or international travel.
